“Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls” Hands-On

Dangan-AE-Despair-West-Fall

We recently got our hands on Another Episode at NIS America’s press event a couple weeks ago, and it’s shaping up to be quite a game.

Developed by Spike Chunsoft, Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls takes place in between the previous Danganronpa games, but unlike its predecessors, Another Episode isn’t a visual novel.

Instead, it’s quite the action-packed third person survival game, and while it was a bit out of the ordinary with the game’s amount of vibrant colors, it was pretty fun.

Players take control of Komaru Naegi in a city overrun by these robot teddy bears called Monokuma.  You’re equipped with a gun which has a blue and green ray.  To be honest, since I don’t know a speck of Japanese, I hardly knew what I was doing, but it seemed like the green rays stunned the Monokuma while the blue rays did damage.  I was surprised to see headshots mattered in the game, but so be it.  Because the gun shot so slowly, there wasn’t enough time to kill everything on the screen.

Who knew shooting a robot teddy bear in the face would be so effective?

The controls were easy to pick up as they’re like your standard third-person shooter.  You run around with the analog stick, use the square button to switch weapons, while the L button aims and the R button fires.

The guns you have can also move certain wreckage around, opening up parts of the city.  It was also stated that you’ll eventually earn other guns that can do a variety of different things for the purpose of more action and solving puzzles.

Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls is slated for a fall release for the PlayStation Vita.
