[E3 2017] “Detroit: Become Human” Impressions

Detroit is a game that keeps looking stranger whenever we catch a glimpse of it, and E3 2017 was no different.

Developed by Quantic Dream, known for their interactive stories in Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls, Detroit: Become Human takes place in a setting where human-looking androids have pretty much replaced humans in otherwise active roles.

The demo at E3 featured the likes of two androids who seem to be against the human ways of taking advantage of every situation.  Of course, like any curious yet corrupted human, they try to go into a store in the city to turn all the androids on in the hopes of taking back what’s theirs.

In typical Quantic Dream fashion, the game is all about decisions.  The course of those decisions also comes with a system that calculates the likelihood of certain things happening.  For example, there are drones keeping watch on the store housing the unactivated Androids, and similar to Telltale’s Batman, you can choose multiple ways to go about things.  Should you climb a nearby building to gain higher ground to take a drone down, or should you climb the top of a bus stop roof to run and take it down?  Each of these options is tied to different percentages, so it’s really up to you to take the best course of action.

Eventually we got caught and had to find an alternative method of dealing with things, which ended up in a chase scene before the main character got saved by his companion.  There are no “Game Over” scenes in Detroit.  Pretty much everything has some sort of resolution, good or bad.

So far, Detroit: Become Human looks interesting to say the least, but that’s all we have for now.  We don’t even know the game will come out, but as we find out more, we’ll continue to cover it.
