[SDCC 2015] “LBX: Little Battlers Experience” Hands-On

One interesting new title featured at Nintendo’s Gaming Lounge during San Diego Comic-Con was LBX Little Battlers Experience.  Developed by Level-5, the people responsible for the superb Ni no Kuni and Professor Layton games, the build we played was actually quite enjoyable.

Based on a children’s TV series of the same name, the demo we played at SDCC gave us a hands-on look at the game’s 3-vs-3 multiplayer mode.

Battles are extremely fast-paced and take on the feel of a real-time strategy game while playing like a 3D beat-em-up.  It’s all pretty simple.  You just run up to your opponent and strike as you please.  To liven up the gameplay, players can choose between just using melee strikes or a long-range weapon for projectile attacks.

While my team didn’t win, I found jumping around and hitting the attack button to be a pretty useful tactic.  The main reason I didn’t win was because the other two people on my team died early on in the matchup, forcing me to take on three other robots.  I was able to take one out, and leave the other two with what looked like millimeters of health in their health bar.

But like Vin Diesel says, “It doesn’t matter if you win by an inch or a mile.  Winning’s winning.”

As simple as the game was, the demo was pretty fun and got me interested to see what else is in it.  Who knows?  I might even watch an episode.

LBX is scheduled for release next month.  For more on this and other games we played at Comic-Con, keep it locked on SmashPad.
