[SGF 2024] “Robots At Midnight” Hands-On

When you get invited to a Mix event, it’s pretty chill. You have drinks flowing, and it’s an awesome chance to meet with a bunch of indie developers and people in games media, but the coolest thing is you get to play all sorts of games without worrying too much about a line. Robots At Midnight is such a game that caught my eye as I made the rounds, and I wishlisted it as soon as I got back to my hotel.

One of the reasons why Robots at Midnight crossed my eye was that it was visually striking. The game’s female antagonist and the animation style all around her brought me Kena: Bridge of Spirits vibes. While that game was more about the adventure, Robots at Midnight is an action RPG with Souls-like gameplay.

When I talked to Dan Posner, President and one of the Co-Founders of Finish Line Games, who’ll be publishing Robots at Midnight, he smiled and shrugged when I told him that I was absolute garbage at souls-like games. That said, I was immediately thrown into a boss fight and through some stroke of luck, I ended up victorious doing all the usual souls thing. Poke at the monster, and run away. That sort of thing. He then told me to explore a little more, and that’s when things got crazy.

As I made my way out, I noticed that were a good number of enemies out on the field. I didn’t have a destination in mind and didn’t really receive any direction, but I enjoyed what I was playing, so I kept running while avoiding enemies.

Eventually, night fell in the game.

There’s a reason why the game is called Robots at Midnight. When night falls, everything becomes absolutely aggressive. Running away from the robots hardly worked, because they were extremely fast, often catching up to me as I did my best to sprint away. Eventually, I got cornered and killed.

Announced late last year, Robots at Midnight will be coming to the Xbox Series X/S and PC. There is no release window yet.
