“Fixture Gaming Carrying Case” Review

There isn’t a shadow of a doubt that the Switch has been an impressive platform, fully giving players the option of playing great games both at home and on-the-go. While portable gaming has seen a bit of slump in the last year, people are finally traveling again, and we’re beginning to see the relevancy of accessories and peripherals to protect that experience.

What Is It?

A little more than a couple years ago, we had Austin Stark come on the Day 0 Update to talk about his product the Fixture S1, rebranded from the “SwitchFix” for obvious reasons. Back then, it was an impressive 3D-printed attachment for the Switch that combined the core and ergonomic method that the Switch’s Pro Controller offered with the Switch’s portability, giving us a comfortable (albeit heavy) way to play with a controller anytime, anywhere.

As awesome as the latest SKU of the Fixture S1 is, there really hasn’t been dedicated way to store that, your Switch, or the Pro Controller until now.

Now we have the new Fixture Gaming Carrying Case.

The Fixture Gaming Carrying Case is a storage option that securely keeps your Fixture S1, Pro Controller, up to 10 physical Switch Game Cards, and any other small peripherals you like to bring with you, such as headphones or Joy-Con controllers.

Why Should I Care?

Of course, if you’re happy with the way you’re storing everything when you travel with your Switch, you can move on, but as somebody who only has the case that was included with the special edition of Breath of the Wild, I’ve been longing for a new storage option.

Admittedly, I haven’t been using the Fixture S1 all that much, but that was because my sample of the original prototype wasn’t as durable being a 3D Print. Fixture Gaming is past that now, as the Fixture S1 is now a full-on, ergonomically-sound device that uses quality plastic, so I’m not as paranoid about its use as much as before. It’s still a little scary snapping it on and off the Pro Controller–you’ll likely scratch the glossy top, but Nintendo’s controller was made to take the punishment. To this day, it’s still as fantastic a controller as it was when the Switch initially launched.

Moving over to the case, when you hold it, you can tell how well made it is. With tough nylon covering its hardshell, an easy-to-use zipper, and a nylon carrying handle surrounded by quality rubber, the Fixture Gaming Carrying Case can definitely take a beating in and out of whatever luggage you want to put it in.

You can put Joy-Cons, straps, or any other small accessories in the pocket on the top clamshell, while a loose flap will securely hold up to 10 Switch game cards.

The flap inside that houses up to 10 physical Switch games is also well made. Rapidly flapping it and out like a tongue didn’t cause any of the games slip out, so that’s really encouraging.

The top inner clamshell is the home of another zipped pocket that holds other small extra peripherals you have. The lining is very soft, so you don’t have to worry about the punishment they’ll take either.

Lastly, the bottom clamshell half features a mold that the Pro Controller will fit in perfectly, whether the Fixture S1 is attached to it or not. It’s worth noting, however, that if you were an early adopter of the Fixture S1 and have the 3D-printed prototype, it’s not designed to fold flat, and while you can muscle it into the case, that’s not something anybody recommends doing.

What Makes It Worth My Time And Money?

The Fixture Gaming Carrying Case is a great solution for what it does, and since receiving one, it’s awesome to not even think about where my Pro Controller would go during travel anymore.

The Pro Controller fits in a spot specifically engineered to hold it, even with the Fixture S1 and Switch attached, as it closes and zips in a flush fashion.

However, while I can understand the engineering that goes into an accessory of this sort of quality, $24.99 is steep considering the price of other storage options also found on Amazon. Nitpicking, I do think that the case is in an awkward position of being both too big and too small.

Oftentimes I find myself wondering if I should bring the Switch dock with me when I travel, and unfortunately it does not fit in this case. That said, the case was built with the assumption that the player isn’t going to use the dock, so I don’t really see the point to having so much space with the top clamshell’s pocket. The bottom clamshell with the Pro Controller insert could also have indentations for a USB-C charging cord and Joy-Cons, while the flat that holds the games can also have straps on the other side to store those, making the top of the case require even less room than it currently takes up. In short, it could’ve been flatter.

All that said, the Fixture Gaming Carrying Case is a storage option that gets the job done, and if you were already a supporter of Fixture Gaming, this would case would complete your set.
