[GDC 2025] “Building Relationships” Hands-On

One of the stupidest demos in video games graced the floor of the Day of the Devs: San Francisco Edition at GDC, and this is not a negative statement at all. If this game actually reaches the light of day, it’ll go down in history for its stupidity, and that’s what makes it fun.

Building Relationships is a cozy platformer that’s also a dating sim, with some fishing and other puzzles thrown in. You play as a house interacting with other kinds of buildings like other houses, barns, apartments, and you can also flirt with them. Don’t want to talk to other buildings? You kind of have to, but if you don’t, you can go fishing, and instead of fishing fish out of the water, you’ll fish cars. See, everything makes perfect sense!

Again, this is absolutely stupid. But that’s the best part.

When I played the demo, I was exploring valleys and prairies that looked like they were visuals inspired by A Short Hike, or at least something on the original PlayStation Again, I’m not clowning on the visuals; I know it’s the style, and for all we know, it’s probably also intended. It’s part of its charm, and the jank comes with it too.

Here’s a couple examples of some dumb things you can make this house say to other houses.

As the house, you can rapidly jump up hills in clunky video game fashion when you’re not rolling around, and in the demo we also unlocked the dash ability and an improvement to the jump we were already equipped with. Anyway, I talked to as many houses as possible, saying the most obscene things I could with the options provided before it was time to go back to Mint, the house who gave us directions in the first place. Before long, we find ourselves cooking on “our first date.”

The date begins with a package that we open to build a table. It comes with all the wood and bolts necessary to get it done. The instructions provided with the box pretty much made it feel like an IKEA assembly package, further adding to the humor of the game. The demo was over after that.

There aren’t any public release details or targets for Building Relationships–at least that’s what we heard from the developer on-site. II played the demo on a PC with a PS5 controller, so I’m hoping we at least see a release on those platforms because I had a lot of fun. You can wishlist the game on Steam here; the demo can also be downloaded there too.
