[GDC 2025] “Shotgun Cop Man” Hands-On

Shotgun Cop Man was one of the most badass games at GDC events. It must be a heck of a feeling to be at an event and just see people never getting enough of your game. Devolver has to be used to this by now.

Developed by DeadToast Entertainment, the same studio responsible for the high-octane My Friend Pedro, Shotgun Cop Man is a game that brings even more violent ridiculousness to enjoy. You play as a cop who goes to hell to arrest Satan.

There really isn’t even anything else that needs to be said, but this is a game preview, so we have to talk about the game.

Much like My Friend Pedro, Shotgun Cop Man is all about frantic fun. When the game was first unveiled, I hadn’t watched anything in detail nor did I really know what it was about. When I walked by it at a couple GDC events, there was a good amount of people enjoying their time with it, but I hadn’t actually seen the game in action at any point. But once I tried it, that was it.

Shotgun Cop Man might look like a precision platformer, but it hardly plays like one. For one thing, there’s no jump button. You’re limited to moving left and right and then shooting your guns. It’s all about momentum and pushback; when you should from the left, you’re blown to the right. If you shoot right, you’re blown to the left. So when you shoot downward, that acts as a jump. You’re equipped with both a shotgun and a pistol, and the shotgun is where you’re going to get most of your platforming momentum.

When I was playing the demo, I had no idea that would be the case because the game didn’t tell me anything. It was frustrating at first, but one I got it, it clicked. I beat every level there was to play on the unit–I think there was 17 levels or something like that. The biggest thing that made this fun to me was the fact that the levels really varied in length. A lot of them are short, and the game also tracks how fast you beat each level, giving them a feel to support speed running. Obviously with this being an event demo, I wasn’t too concerned with being the fastest, but it was all enjoyable nonetheless.

Shotgun Cop Man is slated for release later this year on the Switch and PC.
