[SDCC50] Iron Man VR Hands-On

Iron Man and VR? A match anyone could love 3000. At least, that’s what developer Camoflaj will be banking on when they release Iron Man VR on the PlayStation 4 at a to-be-determined time. I was able to play through a demo of the game on the floor at Comic-Con.

The demo was a pretty straightforward flight simulation with combat training to get the feeling of being Iron Man. It does capture that feeling quite well. Wearing the headset and pushing my hands down, I immediately felt like Iron Man and had a solid smile on my face. To get yourself flying, you push down on the Move controllers as you see Iron Man typically fly in the movies or comics: hands down, palms back. From there, you stop yourself usually by pushing forward, turn by moving your head, and can fly basically anywhere you want. Whatever you’ve seen in the movies is basically your pre-training, which was an odd but appropriate learning curve situation. However, because the flight isn’t on rails and you do have that control, you’ll really be subject to any mistakes you make.

The Iron Man suit designed by Avi Granov

The combat also worked as you’d expect from the movies and it was just really hard NOT to consider the movie influences. There were targets to shoot and punch. The shooting was easily more enjoyable than punching. It felt more natural, where as needing to press and hold one of the buttons for punching, not a trigger, just felt odd in the 15 or so minutes of play time.

The setting will be an original story and Iron Man will be wearing a new suit designed by famed Iron Man artist Avi Granov. At the Marvel Games panel on Thursday of Comic Con, developer Camoflaj dived into the fight for their small studio to win the right to develop the game. The challenge was to capture the flight system perfectly, which they seem to have done for Marvel so far.

No release date has been announced at this time, but Iron Man VR will be released for the PlayStation 4 exclusively.
