Titan Attacks! is a throwback to one of the most cherished arcade games of all time: Space Invaders. While not particularly original, Titan Attacks! follows this formula with success and adds to it in ways which will keep fans of this style interested and coming back for more.
What is It?
When Space Invaders came out several decades ago, it was a popular and addictive game that was swept up in a wave of arcade titles equally as successful. It has since become an iconic gameplay model and many have followed in its footsteps. All this time later, Titan Attacks! essentially copies this mold and offers modern day gamers the same basic gameplay with some new, fun additions.
Though it is more or less a copy of that ancient model, the gameplay still holds up well enough so that fans of this style get a good blast of fun, enjoyable play. If you are unfamiliar with Space Invaders, the premise is relatively simple: you control a tank or base combat vehicle, it shoots at overhead enemies of increasing or varied difficulty and power, and you try to stay alive level after level.
Where Titan Attacks! succeeds the Space Invaders model (which should be no surprise for a game released originally on PC in 2012) is in your ability to rack up cash-credit, purchase upgrades, and more effectively combat the enemies above. You can buy bombs, more lives, better guns, and other things like this–those things make the increasing difficulty more manageable and therefore more fun as you go onward.
Why Should I Care?
If you are a fan of arcade–style games which you can play on the go or in short bursts, Titan Attacks! will be a good addition to your library. It’s now out on the PlayStation Vita, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 4 and you can purchase the license to all three for $9.99. At this relatively cheap price point and the triple-purchase value, if you own at least the Vita and either console you’ll find that it’s not such a bad deal.
That said, this will really only appeal to those gamers who enjoy this style of gameplay. If you are looking for something with a plot, looking for more advanced methods of combat, and a more modern structure for your gameplay in general then Titan Attacks! will probably seem dull and outdated. There’s not a lot here which is going to sway gamers who were not fans of Space Invaders or any of its derivatives.
What Makes it Worth My Time and Money?
If you aren’t convinced by the gameplay—which you’re probably very familiar with in 2014—you might want to just avoid it and spend that money on something else.
Having played the game on both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita it seems most suited for the handheld system. This is simply because you will want to play the game in short bursts and not necessarily dedicate an actual sit-down session to this style of gameplay. Keeping this in mind, it is recommendable for the fact that the model still holds up well in 2014 and the value is packed with enough entertainment to net you many hours of gameplay provided you can get hooked by the kind of combat you’re engaging in.
Generally speaking, Titan Attacks! is a good game. It is made with all the right stuff. The upgrades are neat and the combat is quick enough that each level comes and goes, which keeps you interested and potentially even addicted. There are times when it is frustrating, as all arcade games can be, but more often than not you’ll have a lot of fun with this title and will want to keep playing it.
Again, because this game is only $9.99 and available on all three major Sony platforms, it’s a good deal and will not be a purchase you’ll regret if you’re remotely interested in this style of gameplay. But if you’re into more modern models of gaming and are not particularly interested in gaming on the go or in short bursts, Titan Attacks! probably isn’t the game for you. So weigh your options, check your wallet, and decide if you want to stop these aliens from their earth-bound assault.
