Since the announcement of Magic: The Gathering‘s “Edge of Eternities,” I’ve been excited about what this set brings into the game, especially as a Commander player. This set has new mechanics and gameplay elements that bring new ways of playing. Here’s some of the things you can expect this new set to have!
New Artifacts
We see the introduction of Spacecraft and the Station mechanic in this set where these new artifact subtypes can be crewed by tapping creatures to add charge counters. Once your Spacecraft accumulates enough counters, it transforms into an artifact creature with specific stats or abilities. This mechanic adds a layer of strategy and depth to your gameplay.
Additionally, Legendary Spacecraft and Vehicles with printed power and toughness can now be used as Commanders! This opens up new deck-building possibilities and allows for more creative strategies in the Commander format.
Embrace the Land, Planet Cards, and Owning Worlds
We see new land and planet cards in this set along with the concept of owning worlds. Planet nonbasic lands with Station abilities are introduced, offering transformative interactions. Cards like Uthros, Titanic Godcore, can significantly alter game dynamics, providing new strategic avenues.
Owning a world is a key concept in “Edge of Eternities” and refers to controlling a Planet card with a high number of charge counters, typically 8 or more. This ownership unlocks powerful abilities and effects, thematically tied to dominating planets in the Sothera system. For example, a Planet card might state, “As long as you own this world, creatures you control get +1/+1.” This mechanic rewards players who invest in board presence and strategic planning.
Warp, Void & Lander Mechanics
The Warp mechanic offers alternate-cost casting by temporarily exiling cards, adding flexibility and tempo to your strategy. Meanwhile, Void effects trigger bonus effects if a non-land permanent left play or a spell was warped that turn, creating opportunities for strategic plays.
Lander tokens are another exciting addition, where these tokens can be sacrificed to fetch basic lands, making them perfect for mana fixing and ramp.
Final Thoughts
I’m sure there are more things this set has to offer, especially in other formats. As a Commander player and as someone who’s recently got into Magic: The Gathering in the last year, it’s exciting to see a set like this because of its unique lore, aesthetic, and concept of dominating planets. I’ve always been a fan of sets that have their own unique twists to how we think and play the game. For example, Thunder Junction had themes like Outlaws, Committing a Crime, and Plotting. Or Strixhaven having groups representing different schools.
I love that “Edge of Eternities” focuses on themes of space domination through owning planets, and I love getting to visualize my battlefield in space! Too bad you’re not automatically tied to the “flying” ability. You’ve got to get your charge counters on those spacecrafts so they can become creatures with flying. But that in itself is another cool way to think about your battlefield; things start on the ground until things can go to hyperspace! (You’ll need ramp for that).
