Of three games First Break Labs invited us to try out at GDC, Baseless was easily the most addictive one.

We met with First Break Labs for an hour during GDC, and Baseless was the last game played. Because of that, it was easy to just settle in and enjoy it.

At its core, Baseless is an open-galaxy shmup where all movement is tied to your skill with the guns. Wanna move right? Shoot left. Shooting downward launches you upwards, and you can continue to shoot any which direction, and you’ll move in the opposite direction. Throw in the enemies that you actually have to shoot at, and you have some chaotic controls that take a bit to get used to.

Exploring the various levels in the game adds to the fun. I said “open-galaxy” for a reason. Every level’s map is huge and has a bunch of planets to land on. When you’re near a planet, you land on it, and gravity matters when shooting left and right for you stay grounded, but once you aim downwards–again, things get hectic. The existence of certain power-ups and gun types add to the fun, and I found myself playing through three or four levels simply vibing as I shot my way through these colorful worlds, enemies, and power-ups.

The dialog in this game is shaping up to be quite hilarious.

Unlike most shmups, Baseless didn’t seem too difficult. It’s likely because they’re trying to adopt a cozy vibe, as that’s the feeling you get from colorful galaxies and childishly hilarious dialog you’ll read in the game. This is another interesting indie entry you’ll want to keep a lookout for as we get near its launch.

Baseless is slated to come out this fall for the PC, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and Switch.
