Hands-On: “Gord” Impressions

Team17 invited us to a small event in San Francisco for a few hours to give us some hands-on time with various projects, and among them was Gord, a real-time strategy and base-building game inspired by The Witcher.

Before we delve into Gord, this has to be pointed out: the genre is not my cup of tea. I ended up asking the devs a bunch of asinine questions, including whether or not I can use a controller (I’m not a PC gamer). Keyboard and mouse were recommended, but I quickly switched to an Xbox pad as soon as I noticed things not particularly going well.

The game has quite a distinctive art style, with impressive cutscenes to draw out the game’s narrative. While I didn’t get a grasp of what exactly was happening, I was walked through the basics of creating a gord, or the bases that’ll be making in the game. The tutorial was fairly well done, showing you how and where to place and create certain buildings along with allocating units to do specific roles in order to farm more resources to grow their Gord.

Before long, we were tasked with getting to another point on the map, and I found out the hard way that I got too comfortable. I sent two guys out there to clear the fog of war, and wolves and other beasts were eating my units one by one, but eventually as I quickened the action and had other villagers help, I was able to get through that section.

In the next section, I was doing much of the same stuff and encountered a few bugs with the fast forward option. Before long, I found the group able to save someone that looked like a witch from the danger of another large beast, and she joined my party.

Gord is scheduled for release on August 8, 2023. I enjoyed some parts of the demo, but seeing as how this is not my genre, I’m not sure if it’s a recommendation.
