Hands-On: “Tomodachi Life: Living The Dream – Welcome Version”

Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream Welcome Version is a demo of the upcoming Nintendo Switch life simulator that gives you a little sample of what the game is like. It’s about an hour long and starts you out with creating your Mii, getting your island set up, and starting relationships with other Miis on your island. It doesn’t get too in-depth into what makes this game special, but it gives audiences a little taste of what’s to come.

At the beginning of the demo, we start by creating a Mii. This is a great character customizer that lets you go into great detail with your Mii’s appearance. You can customize their facial hair, height, hair color, and more. It’s a pretty big upgrade from the Mii maker found on the Switch.

After you make your Mii, you get into giving them a personality that includes their gender, sexuality, and what kind of person they are. I love that Nintendo followed up on being able to customize these personality and identity traits after leaving them out from the previous title on the 3DS. Being able to create a Mii that looks like me with the same identity, pronouns, and dating preferences makes me want to keep going because I want to see my Mii succeed. A lot of people are going to find themselves in this game and get a lot of joy out of watching their in-game counterpart find true happiness.

In terms of personality, you adjust sliders that determine whether your Mii is honest vs polite, energetic vs calm, and normal vs quirky. Are they a considerate cheerleader or an ambitious achiever? Figuring out how to set this up and get the outcome you might want for your personality isn’t the easiest thing in the world, but if you’re making yourself then you can just put in honest answers and you’ll get the right result for your disposition.

Tomodachi Life has a robust Mii editing system

This demo allows you to create three Miis for your island and start developing friendships with them. You also have two stores that are available, a grocery store and a clothing store. At the grocery store, you can pick up food and figure out what your Mii likes to eat. You can create wardrobes from the clothing you get to give to your Mii. In terms of developing friendships, you grab your Mii and drag them over to another Mii to get them to start talking. To develop a friendship, you can give your Mii a topic to talk about and watch their compatibility grow.

One element of Tomodachi Life that this demo doesn’t get into much is the game’s surreal soap opera sense of humor. You won’t be able to see your Miis dream and get into crazy situations until the full version of the game comes out. The massive amount of customization that’s been shown off in Nintendo Directs is also not on display here. What you get is an idea for how to create your characters, how to start a friendship, and how to get stores open on your island.

Personally, this is the game I’m excited for most this year. I loved the 3DS title and am excited to dive into the deeper experience that this game is bringing to the franchise. There’s a lot of cozy games out there, including the recently released Pokemon Pokopia, and it’s a crowded field for a game to stand out in. But Living The Dream so far is making a strong case for delivering something different. The demo is only about an hour long and worth checking out to get an idea of what this game’s about. You can transfer the save data over to the full version once it comes out and completing the demo unlocks a hamster costume.

Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream is slated for release on April 18. While we can’t promise a full review at the release date, it is a project we absolutely intend on doing.
