INTERVIEW – “Mega Man Star Force Legacy Collection” devs talk about who the collection is for in addition to other gaming influences

Mega Man Star Force Legacy Collection comes out tomorrow, and if you haven’t read our review yet–our “retro collection and compilation specialist” Kayla Merritt gave the game a 4 out of 5.

I had the fun opportunity of having a quick Q&A with Game Director Koji Oda and Producer Shingo Izumi about Mega Man Star Force Legacy Collection, and it was great hearing about what why the Star Force games got the Legacy Collection treatment, along with who its for, how it’s been improved, and what kind of nuances we might expect to see in the upcoming Mega Man: Dual Override.

Danreb Victorio, SmashPad (SP): Thank you for agreeing to answer a few questions for us, and congratulations on the upcoming launch! I wanted to start by asking about what contributed to the decision to make a Legacy Collection for Mega Man Star Force?

Producer, Shingo Izumi (SI): One of the main reasons is that the original Nintendo DS version
achieved a very high level of satisfaction among players, and the series continues to be
supported by many passionate fans even today. Because of that, we wanted to give those who
were unable to experience it 20 years ago the opportunity to finally enjoy it.

Another key reason is the overwhelmingly positive reception of Mega Man Battle Network Legacy
Collection, which was released in 2023. In addition, we received a great number of requests from
players who said they would love to play the Mega Man Star Force series as well, and those
voices played an important role in bringing this project to life.

SP: What kind of player would you say this Legacy Collection is for?

SI: Rather than targeting a specific group of players, this title is designed for a broad audience.

For those who played the original version, we have made it easier to experience content that may
have been difficult to fully enjoy at the time. At the same time, for newcomers, we have
implemented a variety of quality of life features so that the game can be played comfortably
without feeling inconvenienced when compared to modern RPGs.

In addition, to reach an even wider audience, we have made the game available across multiple
platforms and added support for additional Asian languages.

SP: Were there any other video games, including Mega Man and other IP, that helped inspire the development of each of the Star Force games?

Director, Koji Oda (KO): As I am not the original creator of the Star Force series, this is not a question
I can directly answer; however, from my perspective as the person in charge of Mega Man 11, the
series that influenced me most was Ghosts ’n Goblins.

SP: Let’s shift gears a tiny bit. Are there any plans to use any of the DNA from Mega Man Battle Network or Mega Man Star Force in the upcoming Mega Man: Dual Override?

SO: We believe that the qualities shared across the entire Mega Man franchise—including the Battle Network and Star Force series—such as its approachability for players of all ages, and its rich cast of characters and stories that deliver dreams, hope, and energy, will also be carried forward into Mega Man: Dual Override.

SP: Capcom has always made amazing Legacy Collections. What is your favorite thing about them together?

SO: By reintroducing classic masterpieces in a modern form, we can evoke a sense of shared empathy that bridges generations—between those who played the original versions at the time and those experiencing them for the first time today.

SP: I was just curious if any of you have played One Step From Eden, a game that was very much inspired by the Battle Network games.

KO: I haven’t played it yet.

SI: I haven’t played it yet either, but I’m aware of its existence.

Unfortunately, neither of the devs interviewed played One Step From Eden, Thomas Moon Kang’s hit indie title that was inspired by the Mega Man Battle Network series.

SP: Gotcha. I just wanted to cap things off with a basic question we can all enjoy. What are you playing right now?

KO: REANIMAL.

SI: Monster Hunter Now.

SP: Thank you for your time!
