Unveiled at Summer Game Fest, many thought New World was done, but something bigger has been in the works. We got to try it out, and we can finally talk about it!
It’s tough to explain what New World: Aeternum is to fans of the original MMORPG. The team at Amazon call it a spiritual successor but stop short of calling it a sequel. It’s not a remake either, as it’s an action RPG through and through, except they said you can play with your friends to your heart’s content.
Apparently it’s separate from the original New World, but it also includes just about everything from the original’s expansions to make the whole thing more confusing.
For what it’s worth, I didn’t play the original game, so I don’t have a horse in this race. I just remember it trending for a few good months before the world moved on like so many other MMOs we see these days that aren’t Final Fantasy XIV or World of Warcraft.
Getting back to the demo, we started with a bit of a short character customization tool. It was pretty standard. Instead of being the sword user like most people tend to do, I ended up with the archer. I gave him a beard, and he wore green, so I named him the GrNaRw. I’ll leave that up to you to figure out.
After that, we got to the tutorial where a boat is on fire, and we killed the invaders in it. In addition to my bow and arrow, I had a spear that was pretty fun to poke people with. Before long, we ended up in an enchanted forest kind of setting before having to fight a boss that was pretty simple to get rid of using simple melee moves and dodging. That’s when a cutscene played and we ended up on a deserted island.
It’s hear where the game sort of became about resource gathering. After meeting a nice burly old fella at the beach, we learned how to make a knife out of flint and wood we found along the shore. We were then tasked with killing a boar and cooking it up, followed by a few more Animal Crossing-like tasks that led to us meeting an Irish sounding pirate lass who we had to save. But even after saving her, the tasks given to us were pretty simple.
Simple as it may be, I didn’t find any of this boring. It just wasn’t really the kind of thing you want be doing at a first demo. But if I needed a game to pass the time, this is it, it gave me chill vibes. I don’t know if that’s what anybody’s expecting out of a console edition of New World, but it’s because of this that I’m looking forward to the game’s release in October 15 release date.
Note Added on 6/13, 11:44 AM PT – For those looking to jump into Aeternum early, Amazon will be doing an invite-only “confidential closed console beta” running from July 11 through July 17 on both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Interested players can sign up for a chance to be invited to the cross-playtest here.
