Aerial_Knight featured an awesome-looking survival game at the Guerilla Collective event during Summer Game Fest, and the build we played was quite an experience.
Since I didn’t get to play with any sound, I couldn’t tell you what the game was about, but it featured quite a dynamic sort of cel-shaded art style that just looked cool and hopefully can run at a steady frame rate on all the platforms it’s on..
In its purest form, the game is pretty much an endless runner with the twist of using two characters at the same time. The game can be played with two players, but I actually found it interesting using both characters as the tutorial did a solid job explaining the basics.
The left side of the controller controls the character on the left, while the right side of the controller controls the character on the right. Basic abilities include sliding, jumping, and attacking. Taking an Xbox gamepad to provide an example — the Y button would make the right side character jump, the X button would make the right side character slide, and the B button would make the right side character attack. So on the flip side, tapping up on the Xbox D-Pad would make the left side character jump, the down on the Xbox D-Pad would make the left character slide or duck, and the tapping right on the Xbox D-Pad would make the left character attack.
All of that is simple enough, but it’s always an infuriating joy when you die knowing exactly that you were supposed to do but failing to do it. The levels I played were pretty slow, but I definitely see it being more intense the faster it gets, and while I didn’t have any headphones, I’m sure the sound contributes to the gameplay as well.
I look forward to seeing more of We Never Yield when the game is released on July 16 for PC, PlayStation, and Xbox platforms.
