I had the power of Tanjiro Kamado and anime on my side last week, thanks to SEGA bringing Demon Slayer: -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Hinokami Chronicles 2 as a part of their Summer Game Fest lineup. Announced at the end of 2024 and with a fast approaching release date, we needed to know if it would be able to satisfy the anime and CyberConnect2 fans alike.
If you’re an anime fan in any sense of the word, you’ve probably seen or heard of 2019’s internet phenomenon known as Demon Slayer. Similar to the Naruto: Ultimate Ninja series and 2021’s The Hinokami Chronicles, these games retell the anime in a large arena-style fighting game. CyberConnect2 recreates every major battle from the show (sometimes even enhancing them), including regular gameplay sections to introduce other story elements and characters all while skipping the lesser in-between segments that would take three episodes to watch. A perfect scenario for someone that’s interested in the series, but wants to take it for a test drive with the game. Keep in mind, this is a sequel that continues an established story, but if you really want to get down using magical swords, this game is a perfect place to start and will most likely make you wish you checked out the series sooner.
The game itself picks up after the Mugen Train Arc and our demo at Summer Game Fest started at season 2 of the anime as Tanjiro and the gang enter the Entertainment Districtwith Tengen Uzui in order to find his wives working undercover. What I played reminded me of the previous game with its stunning visuals that still do the art style justice. The fast combat that felt smooth with maximum flamboyant levelsof in-your-face, fun-as-hell action. I’m not the best at fighting games, and try my best to use a character the way they’re supposed to be played. But when I got to use Tanjiro’s water breathing technique for the first time since 2021, it felt like I was taken back to the summer of 2019 and all remorse for these demons flew out the window. Fighting against Daki’s demon ribbons felt challenging to me and beating her really felt earned using the water breathing Ultimate.
With the game covering more seasons, the amount of playable characters you’ll be able to choose from almost doubles with a roster of 40, including several Hashira that weren’t included in the first Hinokami Chronicles. Not to mention who they’ll add as possible DLC after the Infinity Castle movie trilogy comes out later this year.
With a bit more time, I feel like I could have gotten a better grasp of Tanjiro’s techniques and the game does a good job retelling the show to a tee. I was impressed how the game utilized Daki’s many ribbon abilities in a fight and I’m curious how exactly they’ll execute certain fights from the Swordsmith Village Arc. Will they be able to make an already great season even better? We’ll find out in August.
Anime fans can expect more bonding time with the best boy trio Tanjiro, Inosuke and Zenitsu on August 5, 2025 when Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Hinokami Chronicles 2 comes out on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and Steam.
