As overdone as they are today, Monster Hunter and Final Fantasy XIV Online is as ideal a match as you can have when it comes to video game crossovers. While Monster Hunter doesn’t have the buzzing world that Final Fantasy XIV has, and Final Fantasy XIV Online doesn’t have the the dynamic reliance on loadouts with skill that Monster Hunter has, there’s one important thing they have in common. They are among the top when it comes to great communities brimming with positivity. If there is a community nearly as positive as these two games, I haven’t come across it, so when I found out there’d be a collaboration, it definitely had my attention.
During our meeting with Capcom to try out everything they’re featuring at Tokyo Game Show, the “main event” was the MHW x FFXIV Collab. After a quick video, we were challenged with the opportunity to take on a hunt against the Omega Planetes. The creature looked like a robot crustacean with a big dome, and it was absolutely tough. If you’re one of those people hankering for a challenge in the supposedly easy Monster Hunter Wilds, you should get it here.
As you’d expect from any omega threat in Monster Hunter, the battle is fought in multiple phases. On top of being quick on our feet, we had to be decisive of when the best time to attack was. To make matters worse, the Omega can generate a Nerscylla, which forces Hunters to deal with both the Omega and another mean monster. It didn’t discriminate with other monsters either, as it was able to spew out micromonsters that self-destruct to give hunters a reason to down their potions.
This thing is ugly. Have we ever fought a robot in Monster Hunter before?!
Not to ruin anybody’s excitement, but we weren’t able to defeat this thing. We tried twice, even with one of Capcom’s PR guys. As much as I’d love to blame it on our (lack of) skill, I’ll call this thing a worthy challenge. For the record, I stuck to my guns as a Dual Blades wielder.
While all we were able to play was the fight, a lot of the Final Fantasy charm was apparent outside of just the Omega. The Seikrets we rode were actually Chocobos, complete with their music to go along with the collaboration’s theme. We also came across Cactuars during the fight, which launched an onslaught of needles at our foes whenever we interacted with that special piece of endemic life. The hunter I was using also appeared to resemble Cecil Harvey, the Dark Knight (which I’m sure is in FFXIV, but because I don’t play it, I’ll refer to FFIV). The Dark Knight’s armor can be smithed when gathering materials from the Omega Planetes. Pictomancer spells will also be available during the event, but because I never used anybody with such abilities, I’m not privy to how those work.
Either way you look at it, the MHW x FFXIV collaboration definitely looks to be a promising one, especially to those who’ve been looking for more of a challenge after the Monster Hunter Wilds‘ initial release at the beginning of the year. If you’re in Japan and going to TGS, this fight will be one of the biggest attractions at Capcom’s booth, so definitely line up if you’re interested.
No need to call fool around calling your Seikret a chocobo anymore. Monster Hunter Wilds will have real Chocobos now.
The special Monster Hunter Wilds x Final Fantasy XIV Online collaboration will come with Title Update 3, scheduled for release on September 29, 2025. Players should have access to a special extra mission in the Iceshard Cliffs when they’ve reached at least Hunter Rank 41, completed the main mission “What Lies Ahead.” For more information about the collab, you can check out Capcom’s official page here.
